An open mind. A romantic heart. And some simple and audacious surprises!

How athletic and sporty is India compared to other countries?

Sports film from India. Hip Hip Hurray. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Chak De India. Sultan.

Some Friday’s I kinda slack. But today I started the day early. Took a long shower. Shampooed my hair twice. And met a friend before heading to work. On the train ride, I even demo-ed phonepop to a couple of strangers. They loved it.

By early afternoon I had finished most of the Acquia Engineering work. Then I began roaming around the internet forest. Sometimes bored. Sometimes jumping here to there and wondering at random things. At one point Berlin’s octoberfest was researched for quite a bit. They do it at a different time than Munich. I made some plans for Berlin with AB. Let’s see if we actually do it. So far I have only been to the octoberfest in Bangalore. On a random impulse I searched for olympic updates next. The first thing google brought me was Country names and number of athletes.

The bored guy in me copy pasted the results to temporary file, replaced space-dot-space with double-colons, and tried some awk brush strokes on it.

awk -F"::" '{print $2 "::" $1}' < /tmp/rio | sort -nr | awk -F"::" '{print $1 " from (#" NR ") " $2}'

That gave me the below list, and damn I was disappointed.

What happened to the unstoppable wrestler of Sultan? The feisty girls of Chak De India? The younger bikers of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar? Or the silly kids of Hip Hip Hooray? Aren’t our films a mirror of our social reality?

Could it be that filmmakers are cheats? Could India running on the ground be very different from India standing in front of the camera? PM Modi looked infinitely proud when meeting sportsperson before they took off for Rio. CM Arvind tweets about films all the time. The people of India are cheating them. They are not telling them how the largest democracy is at 25th position on the list below. They are hoodwinking Modi and Arvind with facebook likes on Neeraj Chopra videos.

Maybe a small rebel group somewhere is working hard to have bigger and sportier Indian contingent at the Olympics.

Rio Olympics Country name and number of Athletes

Some friends will shout at me for writing a stupid blog post. Sorry guys. Like I said, I was getting a little bored. The next time that happens maybe I will improve my pool game, or normalize the athlete data against population.

Do they have pool in the Olympics? Guys, just get me some beer with it. I am gonna bring home the gold.
